Ponies, Ponies, Everywhere! The Art of My Little Pony: The Movie is Coming!

Even as an editor in one of the coolest industries around—comics and animation—it’s actually pretty rare to get direct access to key behind-the-scenes people when working on an art book. It’s not that they don’t want to be involved; it’s just that they’re almost always really, really busy actually making art for said comics and animation. So, to get to talk to not just one, not just two, but a whole team of people behind something as awesome as My Little Pony: The Movie was a phenomenal experience.

The kid in me was pretty much overwhelmed getting phone time with Rebecca Dart, who has designed so much of the My Little Pony world in the television series as well as in the new movie—which looks like nothing you’ve seen the Mane Six in before! (How? You’ll need to read the book to find out! No spoilers here!) Rebecca really does live and breathe her work, and that love and enthusiasm and energy shone through in every note she gave and discussion we had. Without her, there was no way that myself and Alice, our book designer, could live so deeply in the world of our favorite Ponies while we built this book.

But we also received notes and comments from Jayson Thiessen, who directed the film, and Meghan McCarthy, who is like THE story-keeper for the Ponies, and from a number of talented artists who designed the characters, environments, and other new, fun things that we can’t talk about yet! Every page of this book is peppered with insights that went into the design, story, look, and feel of this unique film that takes the Mane Six beyond Equestria for the very first time and introduces them to new friends (and perhaps foes?) and situations that they have never encountered before.

The art on its own is beautiful and awe-inspiring, but being able to showcase all this gorgeous art together with the thoughts of the people who drew it and animated it made the art-direction and editing of this book something so much more special.

We can’t wait to show you what we put together to help complement this exciting new film!

Sincerely,
